About Renee:

I have been an educator in New Orleans for over 15 years, beginning well before I gained my undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Biology at The University of New Orleans. I have taught children ages 'birth' to seven language, language arts, social skills and now music, using a multi-sensory, movement and play based approach that takes into account the huge variety of learning styles presented to us by children. I have also worked as a therapist and consultant to families raising children with special needs, developing and coordinating therapeutic plans for early intervention.

I found myself on the West Coast after Hurricane Katrina, where I discovered Music Together, an amazing music program that is play and movement based and includes music from an incredible breadth of cultural music styles, including African, Latin, European, Middle Eastern, American, Asian... Wow! I watched my then 9 month old son crawl around inside a circle of seated parents, gazing with awe into each of their singing faces as they followed the teacher's movements, from finger wiggles to large circle dances, instrument play to silk scarves, wild jazz free dances, to quiet lullabies in the dark at the end of class. I knew I had finally found "it" - something I could happily do for the rest of my life.

I recieved my Music Together teacher training in Berkely, California in Fall of 2005, taught for a while in Washington State, and fantasized about going home to New Orleans and bringing Music Together with me. I have been home for 3 years now, and have over 100 families who join me weekly to sing, dance and play instruments with their babies, toddlers, preschoolers and kindergarteners as they bond, learn how to recognize and support research identified musical milestones in their children and build community through song and dance. If that's not New Orleans, what is?

My plans to grow NOLA Music Together include educating the public about children's needs, how they really learn (through play and movement!!!) and how we can make children more visible, understood and respected in our city.
